Honey-Sriracha Meatballs Recipe
Description
This recipe builds flavor by first sautéing celery, onion, jalapeno, and garlic before mixing them with ground turkey, Cajun seasoning, parsley, chili flakes, egg, and panko breadcrumbs. The mixture is formed into small meatballs and browned evenly in a pan to develop color.
After achieving a browned crust, the meatballs bake in a 400°F oven to cook fully without drying out. Meanwhile, the glaze made from sriracha, honey, garlic powder, chili flakes, salt, and pepper is prepared to coat the meatballs, lending a sticky, vibrant finish.
The finished meatballs balance mild to medium heat, which can be adjusted by the choice of chili flakes and jalapeno quantity. They can be served as an appetizer, snack, or main dish with garnishes of fresh herbs and extra chili flakes. Alternative baking methods allow flexibility.
To increase heat, add hotter peppers or more chili flakes.Alternatively, bake meatballs on a lightly oiled sheet pan for 20-25 minutes until internal temperature reaches 165°F.Adjust honey quantity if you prefer less sweetness. These meatballs can suit low-carb diets when honey is minimized.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil divided
- 1 celery chopped, stalk
- 1 onion chopped, small
- 1 jalapeno pepper chopped
- 3 cloves garlic chopped
- 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
- 2 tablespoons parsley fresh chopped
- 1 tablespoon chili flakes spicy
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 pound ground turkey you can use beef, chicken or pork as well
- 1 cup panko or more as needed
- herbs fresh chopped, spicy, for garnish
- chili flakes fresh chopped, spicy, for garnish
FOR THE HONEY-SRIRACHA GLAZE
- 1 cup sriracha
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon chili flakes
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat a large pan to medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil and heat.
- Add celery, onion and peppers. Cook about 5 minutes to soften.
- Add garlic and cook 1 minute, stirring.
- Remove from heat and add contents to a mixing bowl. Cool slightly.
- Add the Cajun seasonings, parsley, chili flakes, egg, ground turkey and panko. Salt and pepper to your tastes.
- Hand mix the meat mixture until everything is combined, but do not over mix. If you over mix with your hands, the meatballs can become mealy.
- Form the meat mixture into 1-inch turkey meatballs. You should get about 16 meatballs.
- Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F.
- Heat the pan again to medium heat and add remaining olive oil. Brown the meatballs 3-4 minutes, rolling them a bit to brown all of the sides.
- Transfer the pan to the oven and bake the meatballs for 10 minutes, or until the turkey meatballs are cooked through.
- While turkey meatballs are cooking, add the sriracha, honey, garlic powder, chili flakes, and salt and pepper to a small pot. Heat gently, stirring, until it is well combined.
- Pour the honey-sriracha sauce / glaze over the turkey meatballs, or you can brush it on.
- Sprinkle with chili flakes and fresh parsley and serve.
Notes
- Adjust spiciness by adding hotter peppers or increasing chili flakes in the meat mixture and glaze.
- For an alternative cooking method, bake meatballs on an oiled sheet pan at 400°F for 20-25 minutes until cooked through.
- The internal temperature of fully cooked turkey meatballs should be 165°F for safety.
- Reduce honey if you prefer less sweetness, suitable for keto or low-carb preferences.
