Honey Steak Recipe

This Honey Steak Recipe features sirloin or flank steak marinated in a blend of soy sauce, honey, vinegar, garlic powder, and ginger, allowing the meat to absorb a balance of sweet and savory flavors. After marinating, the steak is grilled or broiled to medium-rare, producing tender, flavorful slices finished with scallions for added freshness. The marinade can also be boiled and served as a dipping sauce or drizzle to amplify the taste experience.

Description

The recipe begins by trimming excess fat from the steak and combining it in a double-sealed plastic bag with a marinade of soy sauce, honey, white vinegar, garlic powder, and ground ginger. Massaging the marinade into the meat helps dissolve the honey and evenly distribute flavors. The steak is refrigerated for 4 to 24 hours to maximize flavor penetration. Cooking is done on a high-heat grill or broiler, timed to achieve medium-rare doneness, with cooking times of 4-6 minutes per side. Resting the meat after cooking allows the juices to redistribute.

Scallion whites thinly sliced add a mild onion aroma as a garnish or mixing element. The reserved marinade can be boiled briefly and simmered to create a sauce or drizzle, but care must be taken to prevent it from boiling over.

This method highlights the interplay between sweet honey and savory soy with aromatic spices, complementing the natural beef flavor through marination and quick, high-heat finishing.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1-2 pounds sirloin steak or flank steak
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce low sodium
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 4 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 3 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 3 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 bunch scallions , whites only, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Double bag two large airtight plastic bags. Remove any large pieces of fat from steak and place into the bags.
  2. Add the remainder of ingredients and massage into the steak with your fingers until combined. The vinegar will help the honey dissolve.
  3. Refrigerate for 4 hours- 24 hours. The longer, the more enhanced the taste.
  4. Preheat the grill to a high heat. Place steak on the hot grill. If you are using a gas grill, cover the grill. Grill for 4-6 minutes on each side for medium rare. If you do not have a grill, you can follow the same instructions using the broiler of your oven on the second to top rack. Make sure to keep the door cracked and properly ventilate to not set off your smoke detectors.
  5. Remove from heat and allow the meat rest for 5 minutes. Slice against the grain and serve! Enjoy your Honey Steak!

Notes

  • After marinating, the leftover marinade can be boiled briefly and simmered for a few minutes to use as a dipping sauce or drizzle over the steak.
  • Carefully watch the sauce while boiling as honey can cause it to boil over quickly.
  • Strain the sauce and separate excess oil before serving if desired.
  • Marinate the steak longer up to 24 hours for a more developed flavor.
