Hoppin' John Recipe
Description
The Hoppin' John recipe blends cooked long grain rice with black-eyed peas sautéed alongside thick-cut bacon, celery, onion, garlic, and green bell pepper. The bacon provides a smoky base, rendered fat is used to soften the vegetables, and aromatic herbs such as thyme, cayenne pepper, and oregano add warmth and subtle heat. Cooking the rice with the peas and spices allows flavors to combine fully, resulting in a hearty, cohesive dish.
The texture balances the softness of the rice and peas with the slight crunch of sautéed vegetables, while the chopped green onions on top add freshness. It is typically served warm, working well as a side dish or a satisfying main course depending on portion size.
For storing, leftovers keep well refrigerated for 3-4 days and can be frozen for up to three months. Thaw overnight before reheating to maintain texture and flavor.
