Hot Buttered Rum

Hot Buttered Rum combines a rich butter and brown sugar mixture with warming spices and spiced rum, heated with boiling water for a comforting cocktail. The butter base melts into the drink, creating a creamy texture and balancing the rum's warmth with sweetness and spice. Optional garnishes add aroma and an extra layer of flavor to this classic warm beverage.

Description

The recipe begins by blending softened unsalted butter with packed brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ground cloves, vanilla extract, and fine sea salt to form a spiced butter mixture that carries the flavors of traditional holiday spices. A spoonful of this mixture is placed in a mug, then combined with spiced rum and boiling water. Stirring dissolves the butter and sugar, yielding a smooth, hot drink with a rich, creamy mouthfeel from the butter and dark spiced notes from the rum and spices.

Serving this drink hot allows the spices and butter to release full aroma and flavor. Optional garnishes such as a cinnamon stick, vanilla ice cream, or whipped cream enhance the sensory experience with additional spice, cold creaminess, or texture contrast. Hot Buttered Rum is typically enjoyed as a warming beverage in cooler weather or as a festive cocktail.
