Hot Chocolate Recipe
Description
Hot Chocolate Recipe draws from whole milk and cocoa powder whisked with sugar and melted semisweet chocolate to achieve a creamy texture. Heating carefully without boiling ensures the chocolate blends smoothly without splitting or graininess. The vanilla extract adds an aromatic depth to the drink. The recipe suggests serving with whipped cream or marshmallows for added richness and texture contrast.
The flavor is rich yet balanced, combining the robust cocoa bitterness with the sweetness of melted chocolate and sugar. The texture is velvety and thick due to whole milk and melted chocolate, making it satisfying and warming.
Homemade hot chocolate serves well as a dessert drink or a cozy warming beverage on cold days. It can be tailored in richness by substituting some milk with cream or half-and-half. Avoid boiling to maintain smoothness. A pinch of salt can be added to balance sweetness, if preferred.
Ingredients
- 3 cups milk 720mL, whole
- ¼ cup granulated sugar (50g)
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder unsweetened
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate 6.3 ounces, 180g, chips or chopped bars
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, whisk to combine the milk, sugar, and cocoa. Cook over medium heat, whisking frequently, for 3 to 4 minutes until the mixture is smooth and warm. (Do not bring the mixture to a boil.)
- Add the chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bars and whisk occasionally for about 2 minutes or until all the chocolate pieces have melted and the mixture is smooth.
- Stir in the vanilla. Divide evenly in mugs and top with whipped cream or marshmallows.
Notes
- Use whole milk for a thicker, velvety consistency; substituting with low-fat or nonfat milk will change the texture and richness.
- For a creamier drink, replace part of the milk with half-and-half or heavy cream.
- Do not bring the mixture to a boil to prevent the chocolate from splitting and becoming grainy.
- Adding a pinch of salt can help balance the overall sweetness if desired.
