Hot Cocoa

Hot Cocoa is made by combining cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and boiling water into a smooth base, then simmering briefly before stirring in milk and vanilla for a richly flavored, creamy drink. It’s cooked on the stovetop and served hot, optionally topped with whipped cream or an extra splash of milk to cool to desired drinking temperature.

Description

This hot cocoa recipe starts by heating unsweetened cocoa powder and sugar together with a dash of salt and boiling water in a saucepan, stirring until smooth. The mixture is brought to a slow boil, then reduced to a gentle simmer while stirring, developing a rich cocoa flavor without burning.

Milk is added to the cocoa base and gently heated until very hot but not boiling, preserving creaminess. Vanilla extract is stirred in at the end to enhance aroma and flavor. Serving suggestions include adding more milk to cool the drink or topping it with whipped cream for extra richness.

Leftover hot cocoa can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to four days and reheated gently on the stove over low heat with frequent stirring to prevent scorching.

Alternatively, this recipe can be made in a slow cooker by combining ingredients and cooking on low for several hours, then adding milk and heating through before serving.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup water boiling
  • salt dash
  • 4 cups milk divided, whole
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine the cocoa and sugar in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add a dash of salt and the boiling water.
  2. Bring to a slow boil, stirring continuously. Once boiling, turn down to a simmer and stir continually for 2 minutes.
  3. Stir in 3 1/2 cups milk and heat until very hot, but not boiling. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Divide between 4 mugs.
  4. Serve: Add another splash of milk to the mugs of cocoa to cool it to drinking temperature, if desired. Top with whipped cream.
  5. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Rewarm on the stove over low heat, stirring frequently.

Notes

  • For a slow cooker version, combine cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and boiling water and cook on low for 2-3 hours.
  • Add milk and cook for an additional 30 minutes or until hot before serving.
  • Top with half and half or whipped cream as desired.
