Hot Fudge Sauce

Hot Fudge Sauce is a rich, smooth dessert topping made by simmering cream, butter, sugar, and salt, then melting chocolate into the mixture and thickening it with Dutch-process cocoa. Finished with vanilla extract, it provides a glossy, thick sauce ideal for warming over ice cream or desserts.

Description

The Hot Fudge Sauce recipe starts by gently simmering heavy cream, unsalted butter, sugar, and salt to create a base. Once simmering, chopped bittersweet or semisweet chocolate is whisked in until fully melted. Dutch-process cocoa powder is sifted and incorporated to deepen the chocolate flavor and thicken the sauce. The sauce is returned to low heat, simmering while whisked until it reaches a glossy, spoon-coating consistency.

Adding vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste at the end provides aromatic depth and balance to the rich chocolate flavors. This sauce is served warm and can be drizzled over ice cream, brownies, or other desserts, lending a smooth, creamy, and intensely chocolatey complement.

The recipe notes emphasize proper storage by refrigerating in a covered container for up to two weeks. For reheating, gentle warming over low heat or short microwave bursts with stirring prevents scorching and maintains the sauce’s texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • cup sugar
  • teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup bittersweet chocolate chips or semisweet chocolate chips, or 1½ ounces from a bar, chopped
  • ½ cup Dutch-process cocoa sifted
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the cream, butter, sugar, and salt. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, and let simmer for about 1 minute. Remove the pan from the heat and add the chocolate chips (or chopped chocolate); whisk until they are completely melted. Add the sifted cocoa and whisk until no lumps remain.
  2. Return the pan to low heat and simmer the sauce, whisking constantly, until it becomes glossy and thick enough to coat a spoon, about 1 minute. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste. Serve the sauce warm.

Notes

  • Store leftover hot fudge sauce in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  • Reheat gently on low heat or in short intervals in the microwave, stirring often to prevent scorching.
  • Avoid boiling the sauce when reheating to maintain its smooth texture.
