Hot Fudge Sauce
Description
Hot Fudge Sauce blends half and half or light cream gently heated with brown sugar and butter, creating a sweet, creamy base. Adding semi-sweet chocolate chips without stirring initially allows them to melt evenly, then whisking produces a velvety, thick chocolate sauce. The addition of vanilla extract balances the richness. The resulting sauce offers a deep chocolate flavor with a smooth, glossy texture.
It is traditionally served warm atop ice cream, cakes, or other desserts, providing a luscious chocolate layer that slowly melts. The sauce also keeps well when refrigerated in a sealed container for up to 10 days and can be gently reheated by microwaving on low power or using a water bath to prevent scorching.
For longer storage, the sauce freezes well. Thawing should be done gently over medium heat with occasional stirring. If the consistency thickens after reheating, a small amount of milk can be added to restore a pourable texture. These storage tips make Hot Fudge Sauce a flexible component for dessert preparation.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups half and half or light cream
- ¾ cup brown sugar packed
- 3 tablespoons butter unsalted
- 2 ½ cups chocolate chips semi-sweet
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine half and half and brown sugar over medium heat until until brown sugar has dissolved and tiny bubbles start to form on the edges.
- Stir in the butter until melted, and turn off the heat.
- Add the chocolate chips and do not stir. Let sit for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Whisk chocolate chips until smooth, stir in vanilla, and serve warm or cool.
Notes
- Store sauce in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
- Reheat gently using low microwave power or a stovetop water bath to avoid burning.
- Freeze sauce for longer storage; thaw slowly over medium heat.
- Add a little milk after reheating if the sauce becomes too thick.
