How to Bake Bacon

This method for baking bacon in the oven uses parchment paper to prevent grease spillover and to promote even crisping. Baking bacon on a sheet pan at 400°F crisps it evenly without much hands-on attention. Flipping the bacon halfway through baking ensures both sides cook properly. This technique works for various types of bacon, including turkey bacon, and allows adjusting cook time for desired crispness and thickness.

Description

How to Bake Bacon is a straightforward technique involving baking bacon strips on a parchment-lined sheet pan in a 400°F oven. This method enhances crispness without the direct flare-ups or uneven cooking that can occur on a stovetop. Lining the pan with parchment paper collects grease and prevents mess, while spacing strips apart allows air flow for consistent roasting. Bacon is baked initially for 15-18 minutes before flipping and returning to the oven for 6-10 additional minutes, depending on thickness and crispness preference.

The resulting bacon is evenly cooked with crisp edges and some chew in the middle, depending on thickness. Turkey bacon requires less baking time for optimal results. This approach avoids the need for constant monitoring and keeps the stove top cleaner.

This baking method allows cooking larger batches by using multiple sheet pans or larger pans to avoid overcrowding, which slows cooking. Different bacon cuts require varied cooking times; adjustments may be needed for thick cut versus regular bacon. The technique suits weekend breakfasts or meal prep when crispy bacon is desired without stovetop attention.

The bacon should be drained on paper towels after baking to remove excess grease before serving. This recipe can be adapted for varying quantities but is best not overloaded on the pan for even cooking.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 12 oz. Bacon

Instructions

  1. Line a sheet pan with two layers of parchment paper. (This will help the bacon crisp up, as well as prevent bacon grease from spilling onto your sheet pan.)
  2. Place the bacon onto the prepared sheet pan. Give each strip of bacon a little space so it can roast.
  3. Place the bacon in the oven on the middle rack. Turn the oven on to 400°F.
  4. Bake for 15-18 minutes. Check on the bacon at the 15-minute mark to see how it's doing. (If baking turkey bacon, check at the 10-12 minute mark.) We want it to be crisping up, but not to be totally browned.
  5. Remove from the oven, and flip the bacon using a pair of tongs.
  6. Place the sheet pan back in the oven, and bake for another 6-10 minutes, or until desired crispness. This will change based on the thickness of the bacon you have.
  7. Remove from the oven, and transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Blot to remove any excess grease.
  8. Drain and cool slightly, then enjoy!

Notes

  • Parchment paper lining helps the bacon crisp and prevents grease spills.
  • Cook times vary: turkey bacon requires less time, regular bacon 20-25 minutes, thick cut up to 30 minutes for desired crispness.
  • Flip bacon halfway through baking to ensure even cooking.
  • Avoid overcrowding the pan to allow better heat circulation and cooking.
  • For larger batches, use multiple sheet pans or a larger pan to maintain spacing.
