How to Bake Sweet Potatoes

This method for baking sweet potatoes involves pricking the potatoes to allow steam to escape for even cooking and to prevent bursting. Baking at a high temperature between 425°F (218°C) helps the potatoes become tender with a soft interior. The timing varies with size, requiring 40-70 minutes for different sized potatoes, helping you achieve a well-cooked sweet potato with a moist texture inside and a slightly crisp skin outside.

Description

How to Bake Sweet Potatoes explains a straightforward approach using whole sweet potatoes prepared by slashing or pricking to promote even cooking. Placing the prepared potatoes on a baking sheet and baking at 425°F (218°C) allows them to roast through thoroughly. The cooking duration depends largely on the size—smaller potatoes require closer to 40-45 minutes while larger ones may take up to an hour or more. The method ensures the sweet potatoes cook evenly and become tender enough to easily pierce with a fork. This roasted sweet potato is versatile for use as a side, topped with various ingredients or served plain.

The simple oven-bake method requires minimal handling, just the preparation step of pricking the potatoes to avoid bursting and ensure even steam release. No additional seasoning is included, allowing full control for any added toppings or uses after baking. Baking whole sweet potatoes retains moisture inside while the skin thickens. This technique is convenient for meal prep and pairs well with a variety of meals or can be served as a nutritious snack on its own.

Oven baked sweet potatoes can be stored cooked and reheated later with care to maintain softness. The method also scales easily for baking multiple potatoes at once.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (218°C). Lightly slash or prick the sweet potatoes several times with a sharp knife to allow for even ventilation. This allows steam to escape and allows the heat to get into the insides of the potato, which in turn helps the potatoes bake evenly throughout and prevents them from bursting in the oven.
  2. Place the potatoes on a baking sheet (I line mine with parchment paper for easy cleanup). Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork tender and don’t give any resistance.*
