How to Boil Hot Dogs

This recipe describes how to boil hot dogs in a flavorful broth made with water or beer, bouillon cubes, garlic, onion, parsley, and spices. The hot dogs are gently warmed in the simmering broth to absorb subtle aromas without overcooking. Served in toasted buns with toppings, the hot dogs have a savory, aromatic taste that’s simple and comforting.

Description

"How to Boil Hot Dogs" uses a seasoned liquid base combining water or beer with bouillon cubes, garlic, onion, parsley, and either cumin seeds or star anise. This infused broth is brought to a boil and then reduced to a simmer to blend the flavors. Hot dogs are added off heat to warm through gently, which prevents splitting or drying out.

The method imparts a mild seasoning to the hot dogs while keeping their texture tender and juicy. They are drained and served on toasted buns with favorite toppings, allowing for customization and balance against the aromatic broth flavor.

This technique is straightforward and elevates typical boiled hot dogs by introducing subtle flavoring components into the cooking liquid, suitable for casual meals or gatherings.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 quarts water or 4 12oz cans of beer
  • 2-4 bouillon cubes , beef or chicken flavor
  • 1 garlic cut in half crosswise, skin on, head
  • 1 yellow onion skin on, small, cut in half
  • parsley small bunch
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds or 1 or 2 whole star anise
  • 8 hot dogs your favorite brand, package
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • favorite toppings

Instructions

  1. Heat the liquid and dissolve the bouillon cubes into it. Add the garlic through the cumin seeds and heat on medium-high until you reach a rolling boil. Drop the heat down to a simmer and allow the flavors to meld. This will also boil off the alcohol in the beer if you are using that as your liquid.
  2. Turn the heat off and add your hot dogs gently into the pot. Allow them to warm through. This should take 2-4 minutes depending on how cold they are when they go in.
  3. Pull them out of the water and allow them to drain briefly on a paper towel-lined plate. Serve on toasted buns with your favorite toppings.
