How to Boil Water
Description
This recipe explains how to boil water by heating half a gallon of water in a medium saucepan over high heat with the lid on until steam appears. Once steam sputtering begins, removing the lid allows the water to progress from steaming to simmering with small bubbles, and finally to a full rolling boil characterized by vigorous bubbling that cannot be stirred away. Maintaining a rolling boil for one minute (or three minutes at higher altitudes) is important when boiling water for safety reasons.
Boiled water can be used for cooking or other purposes as specified. Careful handling is essential as boiling water and steam can cause burns. Using a pan large enough to prevent boil-overs and adding salt only when needed for the recipe are practical tips included.
Ingredients
- ½ Gallon of water
Instructions
- Place the water into a medium sized clean saucepan.
- Heat over high heat with the lid on until steam begins to sputter at the sides of the lid.
- Remove the lid and watch for boiling to begin (the water will first steam, then simmer with small bubbles popping up to the top and finally large rolling bubbles that you can’t stir away will begin). If you are heating water for safety reasons, continue the full rolling boil for 1 full minute, and at higher elevations, 3 full minutes.
- Turn the heatsource off and remove the saucepan. Use for intended use.
Notes
- Adding a tablespoon of salt may speed boiling, but only add if needed for the dish.
- Use a pan about 30% larger than the water volume to avoid boil-overs.
- Water and steam are hot; use oven mitts and handle carefully to prevent burns.
- Only use boiled water as directed by water advisories for safety.
