How to Chop Parsley

This guide explains how to properly wash, prepare, and chop fresh parsley to use in recipes. It includes steps for cleaning the parsley, trimming thicker stems, and finely chopping with a knife using a rocking motion. Instructions also cover storage methods for both whole and chopped parsley to maintain freshness.

Description

Starting with whole parsley, the guide advises rinsing the bunch thoroughly to remove dirt and drying it carefully. For storage, uncut parsley can be placed stem-side down in a jar of water covered loosely with a plastic bag, then refrigerated to keep it fresh for up to two weeks. Alternatively, rolling in a damp paper towel and storing in a bag is suggested.

When ready to use, remove the thicker lower stems and finely chop the leaves with a sharp knife using a quick rocking motion. The chopped parsley should be stored separately in an airtight container with a damp paper towel beneath, and used within five days for best quality.

Freezing chopped parsley is also an option for longer storage, extending its usability up to three months.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 bunch parsley

Instructions

  1. Place the parsley in a colander and wash with cold water for a few minutes to loosen and remove any dirt. Dry on paper towels or in a salad spinner.
  2. Decide how much parsley you want to use and store the remainder in a mason jar filled with water. You want to place the parsley stems down into the water and cover with a clear plastic bag. You can place a rubber band around the bag to keep the bag in place. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  3. For the remaining parsley you’ll use in your recipe, line up the parsley bunch together and use a sharp knife to cut off where the stems start to look thicker and larger.
  4. Keeping the tip of the knife on the cutting board, with your palm on the top of the front of the knife and the other on the handle, begin chopping the parsley with fast up and down motion.
  5. Continue until the parsley is well chopped, store in a lidded container with a damp paper towel underneath, and use within 5 days.

Notes

  • Store chopped parsley in the freezer for up to three months to preserve it.
  • Keep whole parsley fresh by placing stems in water covered with a plastic bag in the refrigerator, changing water every 3-5 days.
  • Alternatively, wrap whole parsley in a damp paper towel and place in a plastic bag for refrigeration.
