How to Cook a Turkey in a Bag

Report
This turkey in a bag method guides roasting a whole 12-24 pound turkey inside an oven-safe bag with vegetables and seasoned butter rub. The technique traps moisture, creating tender, juicy meat while the bag's enclosed environment steams the turkey evenly. Vegetables and aromatics inside the bag add flavor and prevent drying, resulting in a well-seasoned bird.

Description

The recipe directs mixing softened butter with garlic, salt, and pepper to rub evenly over the turkey skin. The neck and giblets are removed before tucking the wings. Inside a floured oven bag, chopped onion, carrot, and celery are placed, then the turkey rests atop them. The bag is closed with a supplied tie, and slits are cut on top to release steam.

The turkey is roasted at 350°F on a rack set lower than center in the oven. Cooking time depends on weight, typically about 12-15 minutes per pound until an internal temperature of 165°F is reached. This method helps retain juices and simplifies cleanup.

After roasting, the turkey will be flavorful and moist from the butter and vegetable aromatics. The flour inside the bag reduces sticking. Using a meat thermometer ensures food safety. This approach suits those seeking a hands-off roasting method with minimal mess.

Proper thawing is essential; allow 24 hours per 5 pounds of turkey for refrigerator thawing before cooking. Adjust cooking times for different turkey sizes as needed.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 12-24 lb whole turkey fully thawed
  • 1 white onion peeled and cut into large chunks
  • 2 carrot peeled and chopped into large pieces
  • 3 celery cut into large pieces, ribs
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 1 Tbsp garlic minced
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp black pepper
  • Turkey Size Oven Bag
  • 1 Tbsp flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and place the oven rack 1 level lower than the center of the oven.
  2. Mix the butter, garlic, salt and pepper together in a small mixing bowl.
  3. Remove the neck and giblets from the turkey and tuck the wings under the turkey. You can tie back the wings of the turkey if you prefer.
  4. Rub the butter mixture all over the skin of the turkey.
  5. Place the flour into the oven bag and shake the bag to coat the inside of the bag with the flour.
  6. Then place the onion, carrots and celery into the oven bag and then place the turkey into the oven bag on top of the vegetables.
  7. Close the oven bag with the tie included with the bag and place the bag with the all the ingredients onto a roasted pan.
  8. Cut slits in the top of the oven bag to allow the steam to escape.
  9. Cook the turkey based on the size of the turkey and use a meat thermometer to ensure that the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. A 12-15 lb turkey will take approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours. A 15-20 lb turkey will take approximately 2 1/2 – 3 hours. A 20-24 lb turkey will take approximately 3 – 3 1/2 hours.
  10. Let the turkey rest for 20 minutes. Then carefully cut the oven bag off the turkey.
  11. Remove the turkey to a serving platter, carve and enjoy!

Notes

  • To safely thaw a turkey, refrigerate it for 24 hours for every 5 pounds of weight before cooking.
  • Use a meat thermometer to confirm the turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165°F for safe consumption.
  • Coating the oven bag with flour helps prevent sticking of juices and vegetables during cooking.
