How to Cook Artichokes
Description
How to Cook Artichokes provides clear steps on trimming and preparing fresh artichokes, including rinsing and cutting the tops and leaf tips. The recipe offers two cooking methods: boiling the whole artichokes in salted water or steaming them over simmering water. Both methods take 30 to 45 minutes until the leaves can be pulled off easily, indicating doneness. This gentle cooking softens the artichoke hearts while preserving their mild flavor.
The artichokes are served warm, traditionally dipped into melted butter or aioli to complement their slightly nutty taste and tender texture. These preparation techniques maintain the vegetable's structure while making it easy to enjoy as a snack or side dish.
Ingredients
- 2 Artichoke or as many as desired, fresh
- salt
- butter or aioli, for serving, optional, melted
Instructions
Prepare
- Rinse the artichoke and trim the bottom of the stem.
- Cut off about 1" of the top of the artichoke.
- Using scissors, cut the tip off of each leaf.
- Rinse artichokes under cool water.
Boil
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- Add whole prepared artichokes and simmer 30-45 minutes or until leaves are easily pulled off.
Steam
- Place a steamer basket in a large pot and add about 1" of water (so it is below the level of the steamer). Bring to a boil, reduce heat to simmer and add artichokes.
- Cover and steam 30-45 minutes adding more water if needed.
