How to Cook Brats in the Oven
Description
How to Cook Brats in the Oven explains a straightforward baking technique for bratwurst or similar sausages. The process starts with preheating the oven to 400°F and preparing a rimmed sheet pan lined with foil or parchment, then placing the sausages and coating them lightly with oil. Baking for about 15 minutes on each side allows the sausages to brown and cook evenly. The recipe recommends verifying doneness either by cutting into a sausage to ensure no pink remains or by using a meat thermometer with temperature targets of 150°F for pork and 160°F for poultry sausages. Times may vary depending on sausage size.
The oven-baked brats can be served immediately after cooking. This method works for various types of sausage including bratwurst, Italian, beef, chicken, or turkey. The instructions note that smaller sausages require less baking time, and suggest using a fan oven when cooking larger batches on multiple trays. A rimmed baking dish is important to keep the sausages from rolling off.
Adjusting the cooking time based on the thickness of the sausages is important for food safety and texture. The method produces brats with a nicely browned exterior and fully cooked interior, suitable to serve as is or in buns.
Ingredients
- 10 bratwurst Note 1
- 1-2 teaspoons vegetable oil
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F/ 200°C. Line a sheet pan with foil or parchment paper (Notes 2, 3).
- Rub: Place the sausages on the tray. Brush, spray, or rub the brats with oil. 10 bratwurst + 1-2 teaspoons vegetable oil
- Bake brats: Bake for about 15 minutes. Turn with tongs. Bake for another 15 minutes.
- Check if they are done by cutting one in the middle; it should not be pink anymore. Alternatively, check with a meat thermometer. The inner temperature for pork sausages should be 150°F/ 65°C and for poultry sausages should be 160°F/ 70°C.
- If they are not done yet, give them 5 more minutes and check again. The baking time greatly depends on the size of the sausages; smaller sausages might be done after 15 – 20 minutes already (Note 4).
- Serve immediately as suggested above.
Notes
- The recipe works for different types of sausages including pork, beef, chicken, or turkey bratwurst varieties.
- Larger batches should be baked using two trays in a fan oven set at 375°F for even cooking.
- A rimmed baking tray or dish is necessary to prevent sausages from rolling off during baking.
- Cooking times depend on sausage thickness; smaller sausages can finish in 15 to 20 minutes, while larger ones may require longer.
