How to cook Calrose Rice
Description
Calrose rice is rinsed thoroughly under cold water until clear, then drained. For the Instant Pot method, rinsed rice is combined with 2 1/4 cups cold water and pressure cooked on high for 5 minutes with a natural release. This method produces evenly cooked rice with a soft texture. For the stovetop approach, rice and 3 cups cold water are brought to a boil, then simmered covered on low heat for 18-20 minutes until water is absorbed, followed by a resting time to enhance fluffiness.
The rinsing step is important to eliminate excess surface starch, which can cause clumping. Both cooking methods aim to achieve tender, separate grains ideal for serving with a range of dishes. Fluffing with a fork after cooking ensures the rice remains light. The guide also notes using a ladle or fork to fluff and suggests careful monitoring of water absorption on stovetop.
A key tip is to remove the inner pot from the Instant Pot immediately after cooking to prevent carryover heat from further cooking the rice, which helps maintain optimal texture. The method balances cooking time and water volume to help avoid mushiness while ensuring thorough cooking.
Ingredients
- 2 cup Calrose rice 14oz
- 2 1/4 cup water for cooking, or 3 cups for stovetop method, cold
Instructions
- Place the rice into a mixing bowl and cover it with cold water. Clean the rice in the water with your hand, 2-3 times or until the water is clear. After the rice is rinsed, drain the rice in a colander or strainer.
- Transfer the rinsed rice to the instant pot. Pour in 2 1/4 cup cold water. Make sure all the rice is fully submerged in the water. Pressure cook for 5 minutes at HIGH pressure. Let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes, then release the steam manually.
- Fluff the rice with a ladle or fork. Rice is ready to be served.
Stovetop Method:
- Add the rice and water to a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil on medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan with a lid. Simmer until the water is completely absorbed. It will take about 18-20 minutes. Remove from heat and rest for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve.
Notes
- Rinse the rice thoroughly until the water runs clear to reduce starch and improve texture.
- After Instant Pot cooking, transfer the inner pot to stop residual cooking for best texture.
- For stovetop cooking, allow the rice to rest covered off heat for 5 minutes before fluffing to achieve ideal fluffiness.
