How To Cook Canned Sauerkraut
Description
Starting with butter sautéed onions and garlic, the recipe brings forward a mild base before adding drained canned sauerkraut and a mix of chicken stock, granulated sugar, black pepper, caraway seeds, and diced sweet apple. The apple adds subtle sweetness and texture contrast to the tangy sauerkraut, while caraway seeds contribute a distinctive aromatic note. The mixture is gently heated until simmering and heated through, allowing the flavors to combine.
This preparation turns basic canned sauerkraut into a more complex accompaniment with layered flavors. Black pepper and salt are adjusted to taste after cooking, balancing the acidity and sweetness.
The recorded note suggests adding fatty cured meats like bacon or kielbasa to increase richness and make the dish heartier, ideal for colder days. When using onion and garlic powders instead of fresh, add them along with the sauerkraut and butter in the pan. The recipe can be scaled down easily for smaller servings, such as halving all ingredients for two people. Alternative sweeteners can replace granulated sugar as desired.

- ½ onion or 1 teaspoon onion powder, minced
- 2 garlic or 1 teaspoon garlic powder, cloves, minced
- 2 oz sauerkraut canned

- Caraway seeds add distinctive flavor; try them if unfamiliar as they complement sauerkraut well.
