How To Cook Frozen Ground Beef In The Instant Pot

This recipe shows how to cook frozen ground beef in the Instant Pot without thawing. By placing frozen beef on a trivet with water underneath, pressure cooking tenderly cooks the meat through while retaining moisture. Seasoning is added after cooking, with options for salt, pepper, and taco seasoning. The instructions include safety steps like a natural pressure release and checking internal temperature, ensuring the ground beef is safe and ready to use in various recipes.

Description

The method involves placing frozen ground beef on a trivet inside the Instant Pot with water to generate steam for pressure cooking. Cooking times vary by weight, with 20 minutes at high pressure for 1 pound and 23 minutes for 2 pounds, followed by a natural pressure release. After cooking, the beef should reach an internal temperature between 160°F and 165°F, ensuring it is fully cooked. If needed, the beef can be broken down and sautéed further in the pot to brown and season to taste.

This approach offers a hands-off way to prepare ground beef directly from frozen, saving time and eliminating the need for defrosting. It’s practical for use in dishes like tacos, chili, or pasta sauces where cooked ground beef is a base ingredient.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup water
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • taco seasoning optional

Instructions

  1. Place a trivet or steam basket inside the pressure cooker pot.
  2. Add one cup of water or the minimum liquid requirement for your pressure cooker. I used a 6 quarts pressure cooker.
  3. Add frozen ground beef on top of the trivet, no need to break it down. If you have longer pieces that don't fit, break them in 2 so you can place them on the trivet.
  4. Place the lid and lock it, make sure to close the sealing valve.
  5. Pressure cook on high pressure for 20 minutes for 1lb and 23 minutes for 2lbs of meat.
  6. Once the program is done, do a 5-minute Natural Pressure Release, after that open the valve to release the remaining pressure.
  7. Using an instant-read kitchen thermometer, take the temperature of your meat, it should be about 160F-165F.
  8. Poke the center and see if it's still raw, if the meat is still undercooked, transfer it to a bowl, and in the meantime discard the liquid from the inner pot.
  9. Select sauté mode, once hot add one tablespoon of oil, add the beef, break it down with a wooden spoon, and brown it until done.
  10. Season with salt, pepper, and taco seasoning if using. If the beef seems a bit dry, add 1 tablespoon of warm beef broth and mix.
  11. Serve or use in other recipes when ready.
