How To Cook Potatoes In The Air Fryer (Whole, Fries, and Chips!)
Description
This guide covers three ways to cook potatoes using an air fryer. For baked potatoes, any potato type is rubbed with oil and salted, then cooked at high heat for 30 to 45 minutes until tender, turning once for even cooking. French fries begin by cutting potatoes into matchsticks, soaking them in cold water for 1–2 hours to remove excess starch for crispiness, then drying, oiling, salting, and air frying for 15 to 20 minutes with basket shaking to ensure even crisping.
Potato chips are made by cutting potatoes into thin slices to achieve crisp texture; soaking instructions are cut off but imply similar starch removal benefits. The emphasis on soaking and even oil coating helps achieve desirable crisp edges in fries and chips. The air fryer delivers a heat-focused environment that crisps potatoes without deep frying, reducing oil use.
This approach allows a home cook to prepare various potato dishes with different textures—soft and fluffy baked potatoes, crunchy fries, or thin, crisp chips—using the same appliance, enabling versatility in side dishes or snacks.
Ingredients
- potato for air fryer baked potatoes - any type such as sweet potatoes, Russet, baby, red
- potato for air fryer French fries - sweet potatoes or large white potatoes like Russets
- potato for air fryer potato chips - any potato or root vegetable
Instructions
Air Fryer Baked Potatoes
- Prep: Preheat air fryer to 390°F (200°C). Rub potatoes in a little vegetable oil and sprinkle with salt.
- Cook: Set potatoes in the air fryer in a single layer. Cook for 30 to 45 minutes, or until fork-tender, turning them over once during baking to evenly cook.
Air Fryer French Fries
- Soak: Cut potatoes into matchsticks using either a knife or a mandoline slicer. Soak sliced potatoes in a bowl of cold water for 1 to 2 hours. This removes starch to give them that perfectly crispy texture!
- Prep: Preheat air fryer to 390°F (200°C). Drain and pat dry potatoes. Add to a bowl, then drizzle with vegetable oil (about 1 teaspoon per potato) and a pinch of salt.
- Cook: Add fries to your air fryer, spread out in as single of a layer as possible. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, shaking the basket a few times during cooking to evenly cook.
Air Fryer Potato Chips
- Soak: Cut potatoes into thin rounds using either a knife or a mandoline slicer. Soak sliced potatoes in a bowl of cold water for 1 to 2 hours. Just like with the air fryer potato fries, this removes starch to make them perfectly crispy.
- Prep: Preheat air fryer to 300°F (150°C). Drain and pat dry potatoes. Add to a bowl, then drizzle with vegetable oil (about 1 teaspoon per potato) and a pinch of salt.
- Cook: Add potatoes to your air fryer, spread out in as single of a layer as possible. Cook for 20 to 30 minutes, shaking the basket a few times during cooking to evenly cook. (If you hear your chips flying around in the air fryer, you can cover them with your air fryer grill plate to keep them relatively in place).
