How to Cook Rice on the Stove
Description
How to Cook Rice on the Stove outlines the process for preparing jasmine or similar long grain white rice with water, salt, and optional butter. After rinsing, the rice is combined with water and butter in a saucepan and brought to a boil uncovered. The heat is then reduced to a low simmer with a tight lid for 18 minutes, allowing the grains to absorb the water evenly. Once cooking is complete, the rice is left covered to rest for 5 to 10 minutes which helps the grains firm up and any remaining moisture to redistribute.
The finished rice has a soft texture with slightly separate grains thanks to the controlled simmering and resting stages. Adding butter can increase richness and flavor but is optional. The process suits long grain rice varieties like jasmine which benefit from this precise water ratio and timing to achieve ideal tenderness without becoming mushy or dry.
The recipe serves as a foundation for stovetop rice preparation that can complement main courses in everyday meals. The option to add butter or salt allows for basic seasoning without extra ingredients. Checking moisture after cooking ensures the texture can be adjusted if needed, making this method adaptable to stove variations and rice brands.
Ingredients
- 1 cup long grain white rice (we used Jasmine rice)
- 2 cups water preferably filtered
- 1/2 tsp salt sea salt
- 1 Tbsp butter optional, or added to taste, unsalted

- Reduce heat to a low simmer, cover with a tight fitting lid and cook for 18 minutes. You should hear faint simmer and hissing sounds while it's cooking.
