How to Cook Sweet Potatoes in Instant Pot?
Description
This tutorial explains how to make perfectly cooked whole sweet potatoes in the Instant Pot using simple steps: scrubbing the potatoes, placing them on a trivet above water in the pot, and pressure cooking at high pressure. The cooking duration is adjusted according to the size of the sweet potatoes to ensure they are tender but not overcooked.
The pressure cooking preserves the potatoes’ natural moisture and sweetness, producing soft flesh ideal for mashing or serving with toppings. The instruction notes that piercing the skins is unnecessary because steam cooks evenly and thoroughly inside the sealed pot.
Sweet potatoes can be stacked on the trivet similarly to conventional potato cooking methods, and natural pressure release is preferred but quick release is possible if in a hurry. Cooked sweet potatoes will keep for up to three days refrigerated, making this method convenient for meal prep.
Ingredients
- 4 sweet potato
- 1.5 cups water
Instructions
- Rinse and scrub the sweet potatoes with water.
- Add water to the instant pot steel insert. Place the trivet and whole sweet potatoes on the trivet. Close lid with vent in sealing position.

- When the instant pot beeps, let the pressure release naturally. If in a hurry, you can release pressure 10 minutes after the beep.
- Open the lid and using tongs to carefully remove the sweet potatoes. Let them cool a bit before serving.
- Serve with your fav toppings.

- Sweet potatoes can be stacked on the trivet inside the Instant Pot.
- Cook times can be adjusted based on desired texture and altitude.
- Cut very large sweet potatoes in half to reduce cooking time if needed.
- Cooked sweet potatoes can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
