How To Cook Yellow Squash

This guide to cooking yellow squash offers multiple preparations including roasting, sautéing, grilling, air frying, boiling, and steaming. The squash is sliced and cooked until tender but not mushy, preserving its mild, slightly sweet flavor and soft texture. Various toppings like seasoned breadcrumbs, parmesan, and grill seasoning can be added for extra flavor variety.

Description

Yellow squash is washed, dried, and cut into half-inch slices or chunks to prepare for cooking. Several methods are available: roasting or baking at 400°F with olive oil and salt until tender; sautéing in butter over medium-high heat until soft; grilling brushed with butter or oil; or air frying at 375°F with oil and salt for a crisp exterior. Boiling and steaming are alternatives to gently cook the squash while retaining moisture.

The squash has a tender texture with a delicate sweet flavor that is enhanced by simple seasoning. Adding toppings such as seasoned panko breadcrumbs, flaked parmesan cheese, or grill seasoning can provide contrasting textures and complementary tastes, making the dish more interesting.

These cooking options allow flexibility to match available equipment and personal preferences. Flavor enhancements like cheese or seasoned crumbs can be added before or after cooking depending on the method.

The notes provide detailed preparation tips for boiling and steaming methods, along with suggestions for various toppings to vary the flavor experience beyond simple salt and pepper seasoning.

Notes

  • Boil sliced squash in salted water for 5-7 minutes until tender but not mushy, then drain and season as desired.
  • To steam, microwave sliced squash covered with a bit of water for 3-5 minutes or use a stovetop steamer for 5-7 minutes, seasoning after cooking.
  • Enhance flavor by adding toppings like seasoned panko breadcrumbs, flaked parmesan cheese, or grill seasoning either before or after cooking depending on the method.
  • Simple salt and pepper seasoning is effective to highlight the squash’s natural flavor if preferred.
