How to Cut a Kiwi
Description
Starting with a whole kiwi, the methods describe first slicing off both ends to create flat surfaces. The basic knife method involves peeling the skin downward while rotating the fruit, then slicing it into the desired shapes. Using a spoon involves inserting it between the skin and flesh, rotating to free the fruit smoothly. The star cut is a decorative variation that can also be applied with a knife for presentation purposes.
The kiwi is soft and juicy, so careful peeling preserves the edible flesh while removing the fuzzy skin. Slicing into wedges or rounds makes the fruit convenient for eating fresh or adding to salads and desserts. The steps provide alternatives depending on the tools available or desired presentation.
Leftover kiwi pieces should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and are best consumed within five days for freshness. They can also be frozen for up to three months, maintaining their flavor and texture for longer-term use.
Ingredients
- 1 kiwi
Instructions
Basic Knife Method
- Place the kiwi on a cutting board on its long side. Using a small knife, slice off both ends of the kiwi.
- Flip the kiwi so that it’s standing upright and use a knife to cut away the peel in a downward motion, rotating the kiwi as you remove the skin.
- Slice the kiwi vertically in half and then into wedges, or slice the kiwi into round sections or into smaller dices.
Spoon Method
- Place the kiwi on a cutting board on its long side. Using a small knife, slice off both ends of the kiwi.
- Insert a spoon near the edge of the kiwi. Push the spoon against the side of the skin and rotate it around staying as close to the skin as possible.
- Once the spoon has made a complete circle around the kiwi, you can easily slide out the peeled kiwi.
- Slice the kiwi vertically in half and then into wedges, or slice the kiwi into round sections or into smaller dices.
Star Cut with Knife Method
- Place the kiwi on a cutting board on its long side.
- Insert the point of your knife into the skin of the kiwi halfway through and begin to make diagonal slices.
- Do this around the entire kiwi, then pull the slices apart to separate.
Notes
- Store peeled kiwi pieces in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days to maintain freshness.
- Kiwi can be frozen for up to 3 months if stored properly in a freezer-safe container.
