How to Cut a Peach

This guide explains how to cut a ripe peach by slicing around the pit with a paring knife then twisting the halves apart. The method removes the pit cleanly and allows even slices. The simple procedure helps prepare fresh peaches for eating or recipes while keeping fruit intact and minimizing mess.

Description

The technique for cutting a peach begins by holding the fruit vertically. A sharp paring knife is inserted downward next to the pit, and the blade is rotated around the center, carefully following the pit's outline. Once sliced all the way around, the two halves are twisted apart gently to separate the fruit.

If ripe, the pit can be popped out with fingers; if not, loosen it with the knife first. After removal, the halves can be sliced to the desired thickness, following the direction of the cut. This approach allows neat, consistent peach slices that maintain the fruit’s shape.

This method is practical for preparing peaches to eat fresh, add to salads, or use in cooked dishes. It helps preserve fruit quality and reduces waste or bruising.

Ripe peaches keep about 5 days in the refrigerator if left whole, and about 2-3 days once cut, especially if treated with lemon juice to slow oxidation. Proper handling extends freshness after cutting.

Instructions

  1. Hold the peach vertical with the stem upwards.
  2. Using a sharp paring knife held vertically with the peach, insert the blade carefully until you hit the pit.
  3. Roll the peach around the blade of the knife ensuring the blade is touching the pit the whole time until you have reached your original cut.
  4. Place the peach in the palm of your hands and twist to separate the two segments. Pop the pit off with your fingers if the peach is ripe or loosen first with a knife and then remove with your fingers.
