How to Cut a Pineapple

This guide explains how to cut a ripe pineapple by removing the crown and rind, then slicing and dicing the fruit as desired. The process ensures easy and safe handling to prepare the pineapple for eating or cooking. It includes tips for removing the eyes and adjusting slice thickness based on how the pineapple will be used.

Description

To cut a pineapple, start by slicing off the leafy crown with a sharp serrated knife. Stand the pineapple upright and carefully remove the outer rind by cutting downward along its curve, taking care to remove brown eyes left on the fruit exterior. Using a smaller knife helps remove any remaining eyes to avoid tough spots. After peeling, slice the pineapple to your preferred thickness depending on how you plan to serve or use it.

The slices can be further diced into small pieces, suitable for recipes like salsa by first cutting thin slices then dicing finely. This method provides versatility in preparation while preserving the sweetness and texture of the ripe fruit. Handling with care prevents waste and makes the fruit easy to enjoy.

Fresh pineapple should ideally be used within three days of cutting to maintain quality. For longer storage, freezing the prepared pineapple pieces is an option, preserving their flavor for later use.

Ingredients

  • 1 pineapple ripe

Instructions

  1. Start with a sharp serrated knife. Slice off the spiky leafed top, or ‘crown’, of the pineapple and discard.
  2. Stand the pineapple on end and use your knife to carefully slice off the rind, following the curve of the fruit.
  3. Rotate the pineapple until you’ve removed all of the outer peel. Go around with a smaller knife to remove any spiky brown ‘eyes’ left on the fruit.
  4. Slice the pineapple as thick or thin as you like, depending on your needs.
  5. Simply dice the slices! Tip: if you’re making salsa slice the pineapple very thinly first, then cut the thin slices into a very small dice.
  6. Plan to use your cut pineapple within 3 days, or freeze for longer storage.
