How to Cut a Tomato

How to Cut a Tomato explains techniques for slicing, dicing, and creating wedges from a fresh tomato. It covers how to handle the tomato depending on the desired shape, using a serrated knife for clean cuts. The guide walks through removing the stem, creating thin slices, cutting into strips for dicing, and segmenting into wedges for salads or garnishes.

Description

This guide demonstrates three common tomato cutting methods. For slices, the tomato is laid horizontally with the stem side right, and a serrated knife cuts off the stem end before slicing the tomato into thin, parallel cuts. This method is ideal for sandwiches and salads.

Diced tomatoes start with sliced pieces that are cut into thin strips and then cut crosswise to form small cubes, suitable for sauces, salsas, or garnishes requiring uniform pieces.

To prepare wedges, the tomato is placed with stem facing up and cut in half from top to bottom, then each half is quartered by repeating the cut. Smaller wedges can be made by halving the quarters. This method preserves the tomato's shape for presentation in salads or side dishes.

Instructions

  1. For sliced tomatoes: Place the tomato on its side so that the top of the tomato faces to the right. Using a large serrated knife, slice off the top of the tomato to remove the stem. Then cut the tomato into parallel thin slices working from the top of the tomato towards to bottom.
  2. For diced tomatoes: Start with the sliced tomatoes. Then cut into thin strips, then cut them crosswise in the opposite direction.
  3. For tomato wedges: Place the tomato with the stem facing up. Remove any green stems. Using a large serrated knife, cut the tomato in half from the stem to the bottom. Then cut it again in half from the stem to the bottom to create quarters. You can cut smaller wedges by cutting the quarters down the center, making sure to cut through the part where the stem was.

Notes

  • Store cut tomatoes in the refrigerator for up to three days in an airtight container or tightly wrapped to maintain freshness.
  • For sliced tomatoes, placing a paper towel under the slices in storage can help absorb excess moisture and prevent sogginess.
  • Use a large serrated knife to ensure clean cuts without crushing the tomato.
