How to Cut Brussel Sprouts

This guide explains how to trim and cut Brussels sprouts into halves, slices, or fine shreds for cooking or salads. It includes methods to remove stem ends and outer leaves and offers step-by-step approaches for different cutting styles using a knife. Prepared sprouts stored properly remain fresh for up to three days.

Description

The process begins by trimming about a quarter inch off the stem of each Brussels sprout and discarding any yellowed or wilted outer leaves. This ensures freshness and removes tough parts.

To halve the sprouts, slice each one lengthwise through the center. For slices, the sprouts are held firmly and sliced crosswise into thin, quarter-inch pieces. Finely shredded sprouts require first halving the sprout, placing the cut side down, then making thin crosswise cuts to create shreds suitable for salads or slaws.

Proper storage involves placing cut sprouts in an airtight container or plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper, optionally with a paper towel to absorb moisture and extend freshness up to three days.
