How to Cut Grapefruit

This method for cutting grapefruit guides you through removing the peel and separating segments neatly by cutting along the membranes. It produces clean, membrane-free segments ideal for eating fresh or using in recipes. The technique avoids mess and maximizes the amount of usable fruit while minimizing pith and peel.

Description

How to Cut Grapefruit explains a step-by-step approach to peel and segment a grapefruit efficiently. First, the top and bottom are trimmed to stabilize the fruit. The peel and white pith are then carefully sliced away following the curved surface to expose the flesh. Noticing the membranes between segments helps guide the removal of individual pieces.

Using a sharp paring knife, each segment is cut free from the membrane by slicing downward on both sides, allowing it to pop out cleanly. This method produces neat, juicy grapefruit sections ready to eat or add to salads or desserts.

Cut grapefruit can be stored in an airtight container for several days or frozen for up to six months, preserving its flavor for use in smoothies or other dishes. Proper cutting preserves the quality and ease of use for later meals.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 grapefruit

Instructions

  1. Place the grapefruit on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, slice off a half inch of the top and bottom of the orange.
  2. Stand the grapefruit up so the flesh is exposed and begin to cut the skin off following the contour of the grapefruit and the white pith.
  3. Repeat the peeling technique using the exposed contour of the white pith as your guide.
  4. Take note of the membrane in between each segment.
  5. Using a sharp paring knife, carefully hold the grapefruit in your hand, cut downward between the membrane and the segment. Once you reach the center of the grapefruit, stop and make a second angled cut in a similar way. And the segment should pop right out.
  6. Repeat working your way around the grapefruit until you remove all the segments.

Notes

  • Store cut grapefruit in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days to maintain freshness.
  • Cut grapefruit freezes well for up to 6 months; thaw before eating or add frozen to smoothies.
