How to Cut Green Onions

This guide demonstrates how to slice green onions precisely from their green end towards the white, reserving the white portions for other uses. The method involves stacking several onions, slicing them with a rocking knife motion, and rinsing the cut pieces before storing. This preparation helps keep green onions fresh and ready for various recipes while maximizing their use by separating the white and green parts.

Description

How to Cut Green Onions offers a clear technique for slicing green onions neatly and efficiently. You start by stacking 2 to 3 rinsed and dried green onions and then cutting them in a controlled rocking motion from the greenest section down toward the white base. The white parts are set aside for future use, preserving their flavor independent of the greens. After slicing, rinsing the cut sections under cool water and thoroughly drying them helps remove excess dirt or grit, making the onions cleaner and crisper for cooking or garnishing.

The instructions also include proper storage advice: after drying, the cut green onions are stored in a lidded container in the refrigerator with paper towels to absorb moisture, enhancing their shelf life. The notes emphasize storing whole green onions separately either standing in water covered by plastic or rolled in damp paper towels within bags to extend freshness. This method helps maintain green onions in good condition for up to several days, reducing waste.
