How to Cut Papaya
Description
To cut a papaya, start by slicing it lengthwise in half with a sharp knife. Remove the black seeds and attached membranes using a spoon. Peel the skin carefully while holding the fruit upright to retain as much flesh as possible. The peeled papaya halves are then sliced or cubed as desired.
Thin slices are made by cutting across the curvature of the papaya with the hollow side down, resulting in delicate pieces suitable for salads or snacks. For bite-sized cubes, the halves are cut into wider slices then chopped into chunks, convenient for fruit salads or cooking.
After cutting, papaya can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days in an airtight container. Placing a paper towel inside the container helps absorb excess moisture to prevent sogginess. To freeze, pieces are spread in a single layer on parchment-lined trays, frozen until firm, then transferred to freezer bags for longer storage. This keeps them from clumping together and maintains quality for future use.
Ingredients
- 1 papaya ripe
Instructions
- Using a large sharp knife, cut the papaya in half lengthwise.
- Using a spoon, scoop out the black seeds from both halves along with the sticky membrane attached to the seeds.
- To peel the skin, hold the halved papaya vertically, and use your knife to peel off the skin, being careful not to peel away too much of the flesh.
- Discard the skin and slice the flesh into desired shapes.
Cut the Papaya into desired shape
- Thin slices: Turn the papaya hollow side down, then cut thin slices around the curvature of the papaya crosswise.
- Bite Sized Cubes: Turn the papaya hollow side down, then cut wide slices around the curvature of the papaya crosswise. Then cut each wedge into bite-sized chunks.
Notes
- Store cut papaya in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days to maintain freshness.
- Placing a paper towel inside the storage container helps absorb extra moisture and prevents the papaya from becoming mushy.
- To freeze papaya, spread pieces in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until firm before transferring to a freezer bag to avoid clumping.
