How to Make a Microwave Sweet Potato
Description
To make a microwave sweet potato, first scrub and dry a medium-sized sweet potato and pierce it several times with a fork to allow steam to escape. Microwave the potato for 2 minutes 30 seconds, then carefully flip and microwave for another 2 minutes 30 seconds. Check for doneness by piercing with a knife; repeat microwaving in 30-second increments if needed until tender. Let the potato rest before slicing open and adding optional toppings such as butter, salt, and pepper. When cooking multiple sweet potatoes simultaneously, stagger them with space between and increase cooking time per side by 1 minute per additional potato to achieve even results.
Ingredients
- 1 sweet potato medium
Optional toppings
- 1 tablespoon butter
- salt
- black pepper
Instructions
- Scrub and dry your sweet potato and then pierce it on all sides with a fork, 5 or 6 times total.
- Place the potato in the microwave and cook for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Carefully (the potato will be hot) flip the sweet potato over and microwave for an additional 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
- Use a knife to pierce the sweet potato to check for doneness. It should slide in smoothly without any resistance. If potato is still undercooked, continue to microwave in 30 second increments until softened.
- Allow the cooked potato to rest for 2 minutes before slicing open.
- Top with toppings of your choosing and enjoy!
Notes
- Cook multiple sweet potatoes at once by spacing them apart in the microwave and adding 1 minute per side for each additional potato (e.g., 3 1/2 minutes per side for 2 potatoes).
- Approximate nutrition information is for an 8-ounce sweet potato without toppings.
