How to Make a Mint Julep

A Mint Julep blends fresh mint leaves muddled with simple syrup and bourbon served over crushed ice. Optionally topped with sparkling water for a light finish, this cocktail offers a fragrant and mildly sweet flavor profile, accentuating the sharpness of the bourbon and the freshness of mint.

Description

The Mint Julep starts with muddling fresh mint leaves together with simple syrup in a chilled glass to release the mint's oils and aroma. Crushed ice fills the glass, cooling the drink rapidly. Bourbon is poured over the ice and mixed gently to blend flavors. An optional splash of sparkling water, club soda, or tonic water can be added for a slightly effervescent finish.

This classic cocktail balances sweetness and herbaceous freshness with the warmth of bourbon, and the crushed ice keeps it chilled and dilutes it slowly for smooth sipping. The aroma and last fresh taste of mint garnish complete the sensory experience.

Typically served immediately, the Mint Julep suits warm weather or occasions that call for a refreshing bourbon drink. The simple syrup can be prepared and stored in advance, allowing for quick assembly.

Simple Syrup:

  • 1 cup sugar

Mint Julep:

  • 5 mint leaves plus more for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon simple syrup or more if desired
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • ice crushed
  • sparkling water or club soda or tonic water, optional

Instructions

  1. Make simple syrup: In a small saucepan, heat 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar until sugar dissolves. Set aside to cool. Use 1 tsp per mint julep cocktail.Store leftover syrup in a sealed container in the fridge.  Use in more mint juleps, iced tea, or other drinks.  Use within a year.
  2. Chill an old fashioned cocktail glass (or mint julep cup). Muddle mint leaves and simple syrup until mint leaves look softened and smell very fragrant.
  3. Fill glass with crushed ice, then pour bourbon over ice. Stir once or twice, and fill glass with sparkling water, club soda, or tonic water if desired.
  4. Garnish with more mint.  Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Simple syrup can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator up to a year.
  • Use fresh mint leaves for the best aroma and flavor.
  • Chill the glass beforehand to keep the cocktail colder longer.
  • Sparkling water is optional and adds a lightly fizzy finish.
