How To Make A Mint Julep (Recipe)
Description
The recipe begins by gently muddling fresh mint leaves with simple syrup to extract the mint essence while keeping the leaves largely intact, which prevents bitterness. Adding bourbon delivers the cocktail's warming base spirit, and filling the cup with shaved ice chills the drink and dilutes it to balance flavors. A light stir integrates the ingredients without bruising the mint further. Garnishing with additional mint leaves adds visual appeal and an extra layer of aroma.
This preparation maintains the iconic combination of spirit, sweetness, and fresh herbaceousness distinctive to a Mint Julep. The use of shaved ice is traditional and ensures slow melting, keeping the drink cool over time.
The drink is typically served in a copper cup to maintain a cold temperature. This recipe suits those familiar with classic bourbon cocktails or anyone interested in a traditional southern-inspired refreshment.
