How to Make Basil Mayonnaise

This basil mayonnaise blends fresh basil leaves with mayonnaise and lemon juice, resulting in a creamy condiment with herbaceous notes and a mild tang. Blended until smooth with small flecks of basil, it adds a vibrant green color and fresh flavor to sandwiches, salads, or grilled vegetables. The optional garlic and lemon zest can provide extra aroma and brightness. Chilling the mayonnaise before use helps it thicken for an ideal texture.

Description

How to Make Basil Mayonnaise combines mayonnaise with generous amounts of fresh basil leaves and lemon juice to create a bright and creamy sauce. The basil is processed with the mayo until the mixture is pale green with tiny visible flecks, which lends fresh herbal undertones without overpowering the mayonnaise's richness.

This mayonnaise has a smooth texture that thickens after chilling. Adding garlic and lemon zest is optional and can enhance the flavor with subtle pungency and citrus notes. Salt is adjusted to taste to balance the flavors.

This basil mayonnaise pairs well with sandwiches, wraps, grilled vegetables, or as a dip. Its fresh basil character makes it a pleasant variation on plain mayonnaise, especially during basil’s peak season.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 cups basil leaves, lightly packed
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp lemon zest, optional
  • 1 clove garlic optional

Instructions

  1. Put mayonnaise, fresh basil leaves, and lemon juice in a food processor or blender (also add the garlic and lemon zest if you are using.) Note: If you are doing a small batch it helps to have a smaller sized machine.
  2. Blend, scraping down the sides of the bowl as necessary, until the mayo is pale green and the basil has been incorporated. There will still be small flecks of basil visible. If there are any larger pieces, keep blending.
  3. Add salt to taste, and adjust any of the ingredients to your liking. Blend in more basil, salt, or lemon juice if you like.
  4. Chill the mayo before using, it will thicken as it chills. Use within a week.
