How to Make Cold Brew Coffee
Description
This cold brew coffee recipe uses fresh, coarsely ground coffee combined with filtered water and steeped at room temperature for a lengthy period to create a smooth, mellow concentrate. The extended steeping allows gentle extraction of flavor compounds without the bitterness or acidity typical of hot brewing techniques.
After steeping, the coffee is strained through cheesecloth placed in a fine mesh strainer to remove grounds, resulting in a clean, clear brew. Stored in the refrigerator, this concentrate is ready to serve cold. When poured over ice, milk or plant-based milk can be added to balance strength and creaminess.
The cold brew's concentrated nature allows for personal adjustments by diluting with water or additional milk according to preference. Freshly ground coffee is recommended for optimal flavor; pre-ground coffee may impart a stale taste. This method produces a smooth cold coffee that can be kept chilled for future servings.
Ingredients
- 1½ cups coffee fresh, coarsely ground
- 3 cups water filtered
- milk optional, for serving, or plant milk
Instructions
- Place the ground coffee in a 28-ounce mason jar, or similar. Add the water, then stir. Cover and set aside for 12 to 24 hours at room temperature.
- Spread a piece of cheesecloth in a fine mesh strainer and place it over a large bowl. Pour the coffee into the bowl to strain it. Store the strained coffee in the fridge.
- When ready to serve, pour over ice and add milk, if desired.
- If the coffee is stronger than you'd like, dilute it with water or additional milk, as desired.
Notes
- Use freshly ground coffee for a fresher, richer flavor profile in your cold brew.
