How to Make Crostini

How to Make Crostini shows the method to toast thin baguette slices brushed with olive oil, then seasoned with salt and pepper. The bread is broiled briefly on both sides until crisp and golden. The resulting crostini have a crunchy texture and a balanced olive oil flavor, suitable for a variety of toppings or as a snack on their own. Using a broiler keeps the toasting process quick and even.

Description

How to Make Crostini details preparing thin slices of baguette bread, brushed with olive oil and seasoned with kosher salt and black pepper before broiling them on each side until browned and crisp. The recipe relies on a quick high-heat broil and turning the slices to achieve uniform toasting. This method yields crunchy crostini with a rich olive oil coating that enhances the bread’s flavor and texture. The toasted crostini can be cooled completely and stored airtight for later use.

The recipe suggests rubbing a cut garlic clove onto the crostini after toasting for added flavor or experimenting with flavored oils as an alternative to plain olive oil. These additions can customize the crostini according to taste. The crostini make a versatile base for toppings or a crunchy accompaniment to dips.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 baguette (8 to 10 ounces) sliced into 1/4 to 3/8 inch slides, this should yield 40 to 60 slices
  • 1/2 cup olive oil or 1 stick of butter
  • kosher salt
  • black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to broil.
  2. Slice bread into 1/4 to 3/8 inch slices, and place sliced bread onto a rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle half of the olive oil over the sliced bread.
  3. Use a pastry brush to brush out olive oil evenly. Season with salt and pepper if desired. Place into oven, the bread should brown in one to two minutes. Remove baking sheet from oven. Flip bread over, drizzle with remaining oil, and brush out olive oil evenly.
  4. Place baking sheet back into the oven and allow bread to brown, this should only take about one minute. Allow bread to cool completely before storing in an airtight container.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, rub toasted crostini with a cut garlic clove after broiling.
  • Consider using flavored oils when brushing the bread for variety.
