How to Make Grits
Description
This recipe demonstrates preparing grits by combining equal parts water and milk with butter and salt, brought to a low boil. Adding quick grits slowly while whisking prevents lumps and sets the base for a creamy porridge. The mixture is then cooked covered at low heat, with occasional stirring and bottom scraping to avoid sticking or scorching. After about 25 to 30 minutes, the grits thicken to a smooth, creamy texture.
The grits can be served topped with a pat of butter for richness or mixed with cheese for a savory variation. Adding cheese while the grits are hot allows it to melt smoothly, enhancing flavor and creaminess. This recipe yields a comforting, mild-flavored porridge that complements a range of dishes or stands on its own at breakfast.
