How to Make Hot Chocolate
Description
The preparation starts by boiling water, into which cocoa powder and cane sugar are whisked until combined. Milk is then added over medium heat and heated until just warmed through without boiling. Chocolate chips are incorporated to melt completely, enriching the drink's texture and flavor. Finally, vanilla extract is stirred in to enhance the aromatic profile.
This hot chocolate offers a smooth and slightly thickened texture. Mini marshmallows or chocolate shavings can be added as a garnish for extra sweetness and visual appeal.
The recipe is adaptable to different types of milk including plant-based milks such as almond or oat, or richer options like half and half for a creamier consistency. Leftover hot chocolate can be refrigerated and reheated on the stove within 2 to 3 days.
Ingredients
- ½ cup water
- ¼ cup cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons cane sugar
- 3 ½ cups milk
- ½ cup chocolate chips
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
- mini marshmallows for serving
- chocolate for serving, shavings
Instructions
- Fill a small pot with the water and bring to a boil. Whisk in the cocoa powder and sugar.
- Reduce heat to medium and whisk in the milk. Cook over medium heat until the milk is heated but not boiling, about 3 minutes
- Add chocolate chips and continue to whisk until the chocolate chips melt and the mixture becomes smooth, about 2 more minutes.
- Remove from the heat; stir in vanilla extract.
- Serve with mini marshmallows, if desired.
Notes
- Leftover hot chocolate can be stored in the refrigerator covered for 2 to 3 days and reheated gently on the stove before serving.
- You can use any milk type, including plant-based options like almond or oat milk, or half and half for a richer drink.
