How to Make Instant Pot Popcorn
Description
"How to Make Instant Pot Popcorn" uses coconut oil to mimic stovetop popping while leveraging the Instant Pot's controlled heat. After preheating on high saute, coconut oil melts to coat the popcorn kernels arranged in a single layer to ensure uniform popping. Adding finely ground sea salt seasons the kernels evenly prior to heat exposure.
The method calls for covering the pot with a glass lid to retain enough heat and moisture while allowing steam to escape, similar to a stove pan lid. When popping slows to several seconds between pops, the pot is removed to avoid burning unpopped kernels. The texture is crisp and light with coconut oil's subtle aroma.
Finished popcorn can be served plain or with melted butter if desired. This approach offers a hands-off and efficient way to pop kernels without a microwave or dedicated stovetop popcorn popper. It retains popcorn freshness best when eaten shortly after preparation.
Leftovers can be stored in airtight containers, noting buttered popcorn has shorter shelf life. If a specialized Instant Pot glass lid is unavailable, any suitable glass cover or pie plate can substitute.
Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp coconut oil
- ½ c. Popcorn
- ½ tsp sea salt finely ground
Instructions
- Turn on the Instant Pot, push the saute button, and then the adjust button, select the high saute setting using your adjust button.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes until the Instant Pot display says HOT.
- Add the coconut oil, and when it melts add the popcorn. Add seasoned salt, and stir around to make sure the popcorn is coated with oil and salt. Make sure the popcorn kernels are in one layer to make sure the most possible pop.
- Put a lid on the pot, preferably a glass one. You can use an Instant Pot Glass lid, a glass one from another pan that fits or we used a glass pie plate.
- When there is 3-5 seconds between kernels popping remove the pot from the Instant Pot and serve with melted butter if desired.
Notes
- Coconut oil is preferred for Instant Pot popcorn because it melts solid at room temperature and has a suitable flavor and heat tolerance.
- Arrange popcorn kernels in an even single layer on the bottom of the pot for uniform heating and popping.
- Once popping slows significantly (3-5 seconds between pops), remove the pot promptly to prevent burning.
- If you lack an Instant Pot glass lid, a fitting glass lid or pie plate works well to cover the pot during cooking.
- Store leftover plain popcorn in airtight containers; popcorn with butter does not keep as long and is best eaten promptly.
