How to Make Mint Tea

This mint tea recipe offers a base brewed from fresh mint leaves and water, with optional additions such as green or black tea and aromatic spices like cardamom and fennel seeds. The infusion yields a fragrant, herbaceous drink steeped for several minutes to balance brightness and depth in flavor. Adjust sweetness with sugar or honey to taste and serve hot with lemon slices or iced after chilling. Variations allow tailoring aroma and strength through additional herbs and types of tea leaves.

Description

How to Make Mint Tea starts with fresh mint leaves steeped in boiling water, creating a refreshing base with a natural herbal aroma. Optional green or black teas introduce tannins and complexity, while spices like crushed cardamom pods and fennel seeds add warming notes. The detailed steeping times optimize extraction depending on additions, ensuring a balanced brew without bitterness. Serving notes include lemon slices for added brightness and offering chilled versions by cooling and refrigerating the brewed tea for a couple of days.

The method includes rinsing and crushing mint to release oils and careful timing during brewing to maintain flavor clarity. Adding additional herbs such as thyme or rosemary can create herbal variations. Preparation focuses on freshness and proper steeping to highlight mint's cooling quality paired with subtle sweetness.

This recipe suits those wanting a mint-based infusion that is flexible with optional ingredients to adjust flavor, ideal for mindful sipping hot or cold. The approachable method makes it possible to enjoy variation in a straightforward routine.

Ingredients

Servings

Mint Tea Base:

  • 20 mint fresh leaves, any variety; use more for stronger flavor
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar or honey, optional, use more or less to taste
  • 2 lemon slices, optional, to serve

For Moroccan Mint Tea:

  • 2 teaspoons green tea loose leaf or 2 tea bags

For Spiced Mint Tea (Choose 1, or Smaller Amounts of Both)

  • 6 cardamom pods crushed
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds

Herbal Tea Variations (Choose 1, or Smaller Amounts of Both)

  • thyme 2-3 sprigs fresh
  • rosemary 2 sprigs fresh

Black Mint Tea:

  • 2 teaspoons black tea loose leaf or 2 tea bags

Instructions

  1. Rinse mint leaves (and other herbs, if using), and set aside to dry.
  2. Bring tea water to a boil.  Pour into a teapot or a French Press.
  3. Crush mint leaves with your hands to release oil and then add them to the teapot, or add them to the pot and use a cocktail muddler or the back of a wooden spoon.
  4. Add any additional ingredients (except lemon).  Cover pot.  Steep 5-7 minutes if you added green tea or black tea, or 8-10 minutes for herbal tea.
  5. Serve hot, with lemon if desired.  For iced tea: make a larger batch of tea, let the tea cool slightly, and then store in a pitcher or glass jar in the fridge.  Use within 2-3 days.

Notes

  • To intensify the mint flavor, use a larger amount of fresh mint leaves.
  • Dried mint leaves can be substituted at 1½ teaspoons per 8 ounces of water; crush before steeping to release flavors.
  • Nutrition information pertains only to the base mint tea without added ingredients from variations.
