How to Make Naan Bread

Report
This How to Make Naan Bread recipe uses a bread machine for the dough preparation followed by grilling to achieve fluffy, slightly charred flatbreads. The dough includes yeast, warm water, milk, egg, sugar, salt, olive oil, and all-purpose flour. Minced garlic is kneaded in before shaping. Cooking on a hot grill with butter produces soft, pillowy naan with buttery, toasted edges.

Description

The recipe involves combining yeast with warm water, milk, sugar, egg, salt, olive oil, and flour in a bread machine to mix and rise the dough. After the first rise, minced garlic is kneaded into the dough on a floured surface for added flavor. Small golf ball–sized dough pieces are rolled into balls and left to rise a second time until doubled.

Each dough ball is rolled thin into a circle and cooked on a preheated grill brushed with melted butter. The naan cooks for a few minutes per side, developing brown bubbled spots and a fluffy texture. Butter is brushed on both sides during grilling to enhance moisture and flavor. The finished naan is soft with slight charred patches typical of grilled flatbreads.

The resulting naan can accompany a variety of dishes or be used as a wrap. The bread machine simplifies dough handling while the grilled cook method replicates traditional tandoor effects without the need for a clay oven.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons yeast 1 packet
  • 1 cup water 110 degrees F, warm
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons garlic minced
  • butter for oiling the pan or griddle

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients EXCEPT garlic in bread machine. You’ll want to place the wet ingredients in the bottom followed by the dry ingredients. Do not include the garlic in this step.
  2. Set for dough setting.
  3. When dough has completed first rise in the bread machine, remove and integrate garlic by kneading it in on floured surface.
  4. Pull off pieces of dough about the size of a golf ball. Roll into balls and place on a cookie sheet. Cover with a damp towel and allow to rise until doubled in volume, about 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat grill to high heat (around 375 degrees).
  6. Once the second rise is complete, brush the grill with melted butter.
  7. Roll one ball of dough out into a thin circle. Place dough on grill and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until fluffy and showing brown bubbled areas.
  8. Brush the top side with butter and flip. Brush browned side with butter and cook until browned another 2 to 4 minutes.
  9. Remove from heat and continue until all the naan has been cooked.
