How to Make Oatmeal

This oatmeal recipe includes a simple base of rolled oats cooked with water and a pinch of salt, finished with milk for creaminess. It offers several topping options like maple brown sugar with pecans, banana nut with walnuts and flaxseed, strawberry and cream with honey, and a chocolate peanut butter variation. Cooking methods include microwave and stovetop to suit different preferences.

Description

How to Make Oatmeal provides a basic method using ½ cup rolled oats cooked in 1 cup water with a pinch of salt, then enriched with 2 to 3 tablespoons of milk. The recipe includes multiple toppings to customize flavors, such as maple brown sugar with chopped pecans, banana slices with walnuts and ground flaxseed, strawberries with half and half and honey, and a chocolate peanut butter option with cocoa powder and chocolate chips.

The oatmeal can be prepared either in the microwave or on the stovetop to accommodate convenience or control. On the stovetop, oats are simmered until soft, then left to stand covered, creating a creamy texture. The microwave method heats oats incrementally to the desired softness. The toppings are stirred in at the end, enhancing texture and flavor.

Serving warm, the oatmeal is a versatile breakfast base that can be adapted for various tastes and dietary needs through its topping options and milk choices. The recipe notes provide guidance on storing leftovers in the refrigerator for up to five days and reheating tips to maintain creaminess.

Ingredients

Servings

Base Recipe

  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup water
  • Pinch salt
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk of choice

Maple Brown Sugar

  • 1 teaspoon dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons pecans chopped
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon

Banana Nut

  • ½ banana sliced
  • 2 tablespoons walnuts
  • 1 tablespoon Flaxseed ground
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon

Strawberry & Cream

  • ½ cup strawberries sliced
  • 1 tablespoon half and half
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract

Chocolate Peanut Butter

  • 2 teaspoons cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter creamy
  • 2 teaspoons chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoons peanuts roasted

Instructions

Microwave Instructions

  1. Place the oats, water and salt in a microwave safe bowl. Heat in the microwave on high for 90 seconds. Then add 15-second increments, if needed, until the oatmeal is puffed and softened. This is only necessary the first time you make it. Then you can gauge the exact time needed and repeat in the future. Add milk and stir before serving

Stovetop Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, bring the water to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and pour in the oats. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the oats are soft and have absorbed most of the liquid, about 5 minutes.  Add the milk, remove from heat, cover and let stand for 2-3 minutes.

Assembly

  1. Stir in the toppings and let rest for a few minutes to cool. Thin with a little more milk, if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Store leftover oatmeal in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Reheat by adding a splash of milk or water and microwaving for about 1 minute.
  • You may use all milk or all water instead of a milk-water combination according to preference.
  • Nutrition information applies to the base oatmeal without added toppings.
