How to Make Perfect Soft Boiled Eggs

This method for How to Make Perfect Soft Boiled Eggs achieves tender whites with a slightly runny yolk by boiling large refrigerated eggs for exactly six minutes, followed by rapid cooling in ice water. The technique ensures evenly cooked eggs with ease and minimal fuss, suitable for a quick breakfast or addition to various dishes where soft yolks are desired.

Description

By starting with chilled large eggs and bringing a small amount of water to a boil, the eggs are added directly into the boiling water for a precise six-minute cook time with the lid on. Removing and immediately placing them into an ice water bath stops cooking and helps preserve the desired soft yolk while making peeling easier. The result is tender whites and a creamy yolk that is set at the edges and slightly runny at the center.

This straightforward technique is reliable and repeatable, requiring only common kitchen equipment. It works well for single eggs or multiple eggs arranged in a single layer in the pot. The ice bath after cooking is essential to halt carryover heat to avoid overcooking the yolks.

Enjoy these soft boiled eggs warm or allow them to cool completely for different serving preferences. They can be eaten plain, seasoned with salt and pepper, or incorporated into salads and other dishes where a gently cooked yolk is desired.

Cooling the eggs fully if not eaten immediately preserves texture and makes peeling easier.

  1. Add 1 inch of water to a sauce pot, cover, and bring to a boil over high heat.

  3. After six minutes, remove the egg(s) from the pot and place them in an ice water bath or run under cool water until they are cool enough to handle. Peel, and enjoy!

  • Soft boiled eggs can be peeled and eaten warm once cool enough to handle.
