How to make popcorn on the stove

This recipe explains how to make popcorn on the stove using canola oil, popcorn kernels, butter, and salt for seasoning. Heating oil with a few test kernels signals when to add the rest, and shaking the pan helps prevent burning. The melted butter is drizzled over the popped kernels in two stages with salting and tossing in between to distribute flavor evenly. This method produces fresh, buttery popcorn with a crunchy texture.

Description

Stove-top popcorn is prepared by heating canola oil in a covered pan with a few kernels to indicate when the oil is hot enough for the rest of the popcorn. Once these initial kernels pop, the remaining kernels are added and the pan is shaken occasionally to ensure even cooking and to avoid burning. After popping slows, the popcorn is transferred to a bowl.

Butter is then melted in the warm pan off heat or over low heat while stirring to prevent burning. The butter is poured over the popcorn in two increments, with salting and tossing after each to ensure consistent coating of butter and salt. This approach results in popcorn that is flavorful, crisp, and coated evenly with butter.

This classic preparation is straightforward and does not require special equipment beyond a covered pan and a stove. It yields fresh popcorn that can be enjoyed as a snack or paired with various seasonings based on preference.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels I very much recommend white popcorn, unpopped
  • 1-2 tablespoons butter
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  1. In a cold pan, pour the oil and 3 popcorn kernels. Cover pan.
  2. Heat the pan over high heat (just under the highest setting, 9 out of 10)
  3. When all 3 kernels have popped, pour in the rest of the kernels and cover. As the kernels start to pop, shake the pan a few times.
  4. After the popping slows down to a few pops, remove from heat and immediately transfer popcorn to a bowl.
  5. Let the pan cool for a few seconds, then place the butter in the pan to melt using the residual heat. If there is not enough residual heat left, melt over low heat. Turning the pan constantly, melt the butter, being careful not to burn it.
  6. When butter is melted, pour half of it over the popcorn. Salt the popcorn, then toss to combine. Pour the other half of the butter on the popcorn, salt again, and toss again.
  7. Now it is ready to eat!
