How to Make Spaghetti Squash

How to Make Spaghetti Squash explains preparing spaghetti squash by baking it until tender, then shredding the flesh into strands resembling spaghetti noodles. This method provides a vegetable alternative to pasta with a mild, slightly sweet flavor and a tender yet slightly firm texture. The roasted squash is a versatile base that pairs well with a variety of sauces and toppings.

Description

This recipe outlines cutting and preparing one spaghetti squash for baking. The squash is split lengthwise, preferably along visible lines running down its side. If it's difficult to cut raw, microwaving it briefly softens it to facilitate slicing. After removing seeds and inner stringy parts, the squash halves are placed cut side down on a greased baking sheet.

Baked at 425 degrees F for about 35 to 40 minutes, the squash softens enough to be easily shredded with a fork, creating noodle-like strands. The final strands have a slightly firm texture, resembling pasta yet lighter and with a natural subtle sweetness. The recipe suggests serving the strands with sauce as a substitute for traditional spaghetti.

Preparing spaghetti squash this way keeps the flesh intact for a non-grain, vegetable-based side or main component. This method is simple and requires minimal ingredients, relying on the squash's flavor and texture. It’s well suited for those seeking gluten-free or lower-carb alternatives to conventional pasta dishes.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 spaghetti squash

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425.
  2. You will need to cut your spaghetti squash length-wise. We like to to do this on one of the lines you can see down the squash.
  3. To best cut, perforate the squash along the line with a knife or fork. You can try to cut along that line, but if it's too hard microwave for 5-6 minutes first.
  4. If you microwave, it will be hot, but use a towel to hold it on a cutting board and cut down the line.
  5. Scoop out seeds as well as the stringy bits of flesh using a spoon. You can discard or roast those.
  6. Place spaghetti squash, cut sides down, on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake for about 35 - 40 minutes or until a sharp knife can be inserted with little resistance.
  7. Once slightly cooled, used a fork or spoon to pull the flesh from the sides and watch it start to string and look like spaghetti. Serve with sauce.
