How to Microwave Long Grain Rice

Report
This method shows how to cook long grain rice, including brown rice, in the microwave using water, butter, and gentle heat without needing a lid. The process includes high power cooking followed by medium-low heat, resulting in tender, fluffy rice ready for seasoning and serving as a side dish.

Description

The microwaving instructions for long grain rice combine rice, water, and butter in a large microwave-safe container without a lid. The rice is cooked first on high power for ten minutes, then at medium-low for an additional 15 minutes. This dual-stage approach allows the rice to absorb water and cook evenly, preventing sticking or burning. After microwaving, salt and pepper are added to taste and the rice is fluffed with a fork to separate grains.

The recipe is designed for a 1200 watt microwave, so users may need to adjust times for different microwave outputs. Butter adds richness and helps prevent sticking during cooking without requiring oil or pre-soaking steps. This method is a practical alternative to stovetop rice preparation, useful for quick meal prep or small kitchens.

The cooked rice can serve as a versatile base or side for many dishes. Including seasoning after cooking allows for easy customization. The recipe accommodates brown rice, which often needs longer cooking times, indicating this method’s flexibility.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 16 oz. long grain rice 1 lb bag Long Grain Rice (I prefer brown rice, brown preferred
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons butter or margarine
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine rice, water, and butter in a large microwaveable safe container. You DO NOT need a lid. I used a 4 liter corning ware dish.
  2. Microwave on HIGH for 10 minutes. Do NOT stir.
  3. Microwave on MEDIUM-LOW (or 50%) for another 15 minutes.
  4. Season with salt a pepper and fluff with a fork before serving.
  5. I used a 1200 watt microwave, so you may need to adjust your cooking time slightly depending on the wattage of your microwave.

Notes

  • Cooking times may need to be adjusted based on your microwave wattage to achieve tender rice.
  • This method works well for both white and brown long grain rice without soaking.
  • Fluff the rice after cooking to separate grains and enhance texture.
