How to Peel a Tomato

This guide explains how to peel fresh tomatoes easily using a boiling water bath and ice water plunge. The method involves scoring the tomato skin, briefly boiling the tomatoes, and then cooling them quickly in ice water to loosen the skin for effortless removal. It's practical for preparing tomatoes for sauces, salsas, or recipes that require peeled tomatoes without harsh peeling methods.

Description

How to Peel a Tomato focuses on a straightforward technique to remove the tomato skin cleanly. The process involves preparing tomatoes by scoring an “X” on the bottom, then immersing them in boiling water just long enough to loosen the skin without cooking the flesh. Once removed, plunged into cold ice water, the skin separates easily and can be peeled off by hand. This method maintains the tomato's texture and flavor intact, making it suitable for dishes needing skinless tomatoes.

The brief blanching time ensures the tomatoes do not become mushy, preserving their firmness for cooking. This peeling method avoids wasting tomato flesh and is efficient for multiple tomatoes. It is especially useful when a recipe calls for peeled tomatoes to avoid a tough or bitter skin in the finished dish.

Use a paring knife for precise scoring and handle the tomatoes carefully when transferring to maintain their shape. This classic peeling technique saves time and effort compared to manual peeling and ensures even peeling without damaging the tomato.
