How to Peel and Seed a Tomato

This method explains how to easily peel and seed a tomato using a brief blanching technique. Cutting an "X" on the tomato skin before boiling loosens the skin for quick removal, while immediately cooling in ice water stops the cooking process. Seeding is done by cutting the tomato in half horizontally and gently squeezing out the seeds, resulting in a peeled and seeded tomato ready for use in sauces, salads, or other recipes.

Description

How to Peel and Seed a Tomato shows a simple blanching technique to remove tomato skin cleanly. An "X" cut at the base allows the skin to loosen in boiling water, while the ice bath halts cooking and preserves texture. Afterwards, cutting the tomato equatorially and gently squeezing removes seeds effectively. This process is helpful for preparing tomatoes for recipes that call for smooth texture without skins or seeds, such as sauces, salsas, or salads. Using this method ensures easier peeling than using a knife alone and results in a tomato with minimized seeds for a cleaner flavor and texture.
