How to Seed a Pomegranate

How to Seed a Pomegranate guides you through separating the edible arils from the pomegranate fruit using just a few practical steps. It involves scoring the skin, cracking the fruit underwater to avoid juice splatter, and releasing the arils from the membranes effectively. This simple process helps you harvest the juicy seeds cleanly for eating or adding to various dishes.

Description

This method for seeding a pomegranate begins by slicing off the top and bottom and making shallow vertical cuts along the skin's ridges. Placing the fruit in water softens the process, allowing you to break it into sections without losing juice. Rolling the arils free underwater enables the seeds to separate while the unwanted membranes float for easy removal.

The resulting arils are juicy, sweet, and ready to be enjoyed immediately or incorporated into salads and recipes needing a burst of tart fruit. Handling the fruit submerged reduces mess and maintains the bright color of the seeds.

This approach is especially useful for those who want to extract pomegranate seeds cleanly without staining hands or counters, making the fruit more accessible for snacks or garnishes.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pomegranate
  • 1 bowl of water

Instructions

Cut:

  1. Slice off the top and bottom sides of the fruit. Cut vertical lines on the surface of the skin along the ridges, don't cut deep into the fruit, just on the skin.

Crack open:

  1. Add water to a medium bowl and submerge the fruit in it, crack the fruit open gently. Crack each piece along the vertical cuts on the skin you induced earlier.

Separate:

  1. Release the arils from the membrane by rolling with your fingers until each one is detached. The water will make the arils, while the membranes float, helping separate the two.
  2. Transfer the arils to another bowl and eat or add to salads.
